Tax Resolution in Claremont, California

Ten minutes west, and in Los Angeles County rather than San Bernardino. We represent Claremont taxpayers before the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board, from the Village and the Colleges to Padua Hills.

What we see locally

Claremont skews toward academic and professional income, and the problems follow. Honoraria, speaking fees, summer grants, textbook royalties and consulting work all arrive on a 1099 with nothing withheld. Any one of them is minor. Together, across a few years, they produce a balance that surprises people who have never owed anything in their lives.

Retirement adds the second pattern. The first year of Social Security combined with an IRA distribution frequently pushes taxable income above what withholding was set up to cover, and the resulting notice reads far more alarming than the situation is. Most of these resolve with a corrected return or a short payment plan, not a settlement.

Questions from this area

I am in LA County. Does that change how the IRS handles my case?+

Not on the federal side. IRS collection procedure is national, and your case is worked the same way it would be in San Bernardino County. What differs is anything touching county-level records, such as where a federal lien is recorded against property, which for you is the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder.

I got a CP2000 about consulting income I did report. What now?+

A CP2000 is a computer match, not an audit, and it is frequently wrong about basis or about income you reported on a different line. It is answered with a written response and documentation. Do not simply pay it because it arrived on IRS letterhead.

Do you work with the Franchise Tax Board as well?+

Yes. California collection runs on its own track with its own timelines, and a federal resolution does not automatically settle the state. Both usually need to be worked, and we handle them together.
